Ways to Control Stress

Join us at the Eat Earn & Learn Tuesday
in Room 312 of the Weber Center!

We may not able to completely eliminate stress but we can find ways to help control it and not let it control us!

The most effective solution is to find and address the sources of your stress. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. A first step is to take an inventory of what you think might be making you "stress out." Ask yourself:

  • What do I worry about most?
  • Is something constantly on my mind?
  • Does anything in particular make me sad or depressed?
Then, find someone you trust (friend, family member, neighbor, clergy) who will listen to you. Often, just talking to a friend or loved one is all that is needed to relieve stress. Most communities also have support groups and hotlines that can help. Social workers, psychologists, and other mental health professionals may be needed for therapy and medication. It may be beneficial to contact your insurance provider as they can give you information on mental healthcare providers covered by your insurance plan.

Other healthy ways to cope with stress include:
  • Eating a well-balanced, healthy diet. Don't overeat.
  • Get enough sleep
  • Exercise regularly
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol
  • Don't use nicotine, alcohol, or recreational drugs
  • Learn and practice relaxation techniques like guided imagery, progressive muscles relation, yoga, tai chi, or meditation. Contact Health Promotion at (801) 399-7193 to check out a relaxation CD with guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation exercises.
  • Take breaks from work. Make sure to balance fun activities with your responsibilities. Spend time with people you enjoy.
Exercise is a healthy way to deal with stress by relieving your bottled-up energy and tension. It also helps you get in better shape, which makes you feel better overall!

Manage your physical and psychological well-being so you can resist harmful effects of stressful events.
  • Have people you can turn to for emotional support
  • Be moderate in your consumption of coffee, tea, soft drinks, and drugs containing caffeine. Caffeine stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and may promote even more nervousness and tension
  • Eat an adequate breakfast each day (hunger can leave you less able to cope with stress).
  • Stretching and flexing muscles of the neck, arms, shoulder, back, thighs, and midsection reduce the chance that these muscles will tighten up and produce common indicators of stress-headaches, neck ache, and backache.
  • Regular exercise will also aid in elevating your mood and encourage a healthy self-concept, improving your ability to cope with stress.
Monitor your present level of stress so that you can recognize early warning signs of stress and do something about the problems causing it.
  • Recognizing early warning signals of stress-related problems is the second step in reducing damage caused by stress.
Maneuver to avoid extremely stressful situations by eliminating the causes of stress and changing your reactions to stressful events.
  • Arrange stress - plan around stressful situations.l Try not to plan stressful activities at the same time.
  • Have a positive attitude
  • Accept and discuss - accept the fact that you are going to have stress and that you can control the unwanted side effects.
  • Clarify responsibility - set clear priorities for yourself and your family
  • Improve time management - Time, managed well, can help reduce stress resulting from too much to do in too little time.
  • Learn to RELAX!

Handling Stress

Need to Relax? Contact Health Promotion to Check Out a Relaxation CD
at (801) 399-7193.

Stress can be managed by developing specific skills. Not all stress relief methods will work for every person and some methods may take a few weeks before it feels "right." Develop your own stress management plan by following these suggestions:
  1. Determine the main source(s) of your stress.
  2. Identify alternatives for reducing the stressor and/or coping with it more effectively. (remember it is unhealthy to attempt to eliminate all stress.)
  3. Identify what you've already tried before and determine how well it worked, or if it didn't work.
  4. Assess your current strengths, resources, and abilities to cope.
  5. Select and implement an option that will best help you cope with stress.
  6. Do it! No one can cope for you!
  7. Evaluate your plan. Determine if your stress management strategy is working for you.

Congrats to Lori Randall, June Nelson and Peter Stoker! They are last week's random giveaway winners!
Here are their replies to the giveaway question, "How do you stay safe while driving OR What is your unsafe driving behavior pet peeve?"

"When I find myself getting frustrated with a driver I try to think that my Mom is driving that car and to just be patient...one day we will be that overly cautious driver!" - Lori Randall

"I drive I-15 everyday. My pet peeve is when slower drivers don't move over for faster cars. When I feel myself getting frustrated I will sometimes get off the Freeway and take surface streets to get to my destinations. And...relax." - June Nelson

"One of my biggest unsafe driving behavior pet peeves in women who put on makeup and men who shave on their way to work!" - Peter Stoker

Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment; it has physical and emotional effects on us and can create positive or negative feelings.

As a positive influence, stress can help move us to action; it can result in a new awareness and an exciting new perspective. As a negative influence, it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression; which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke!

With the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a job promotion, or a new relationship, we experience stress as we readjust our lives. In adjusting to different circumstances, stress will help or hinder us depending on how we react to it.

How stressed are you? Strangely, we are not always aware that we are under stress. The habits, attitudes, and signs that can alert us to problems may be hard to recognize because they have become so familiar. Take THIS quiz to see what your stress level is.
